All My Friends

Jam of the Week

Today’s Jam of the Week comes from the British production group Snakehips. It features Tinashe and Chance, the Rapper. What initially drew me in was the juxtaposition in “All My Friends”. It’s a fun, upbeat song that makes me happy to sing, and the lyrics carry real despair. Not go get too political about a pop song, but I think it also speaks to the loneliness and emptiness that haunts so many of us millennials. We’re accustomed to a fast-paced technology culture that can’t fulfill our spirits while making it near-impossible to rest our minds. It’s why so often we turn to mind-numbing. I say this as a millennial who probably makes more of an effort to slow down than most. (Afterall, I lived with retired nuns for a year). Yet, there have been plenty of times in my life where I’ve lived this song. At the end of the day, people can dismiss pop music, but this song does a fantastic job of bringing people together and helping them feel connected in their complex despair that they might not otherwise talk about.
